ENSURE THE HVO100 YOU BUY IS ISCC CERTIFIED

HVO100 is a 95% carbon-neutral renewable drop-in diesel. Certified HVO100 is an environmentally friendly diesel that can contribute significantly to achieving the emissions targets required to meet the government requirements – especially in relation to the Safeguard Mechanism and MCR requirements.

Unfortunately, not all HVO100 is ISCC certified. ISCC certified HVO100 can be a little more expensive than uncertified HVO100, but it is worth every cent. The ISCC certification of HVO100:

·         Verifies sustainability claims – meeting strict sustainability criteria (meaning - no deforestation, biodiversity protection, land-use controls); ensuring lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) savings are calculated and audited and maximises the probability that claimed GHG reductions are credible.

  • ·         Meets chain of custody requirements - providing full traceability via mass balance accounting across the supply chain.

  • ·         Maximises eligibility for incentives and credits required to generate compliance credits (including Scope 3 emissions in Australia); and increases the probability of improved commercial value via credits.

  • ·         Drives reputational and ESG positioning - providing defensible ‘drop-in decarbonisation’ narrative for diesel substitution; reducing greenwashing risk if claims are audited and transparent; and maximising the probability of a positive ESG impact with stakeholders.

  • ·         Ensures feedstock constraints – limiting the use of high-risk inputs (e.g., certain palm oil derivatives unless tightly controlled); tightening supply and increase price volatility for compliant feedstocks.

ISCC certification converts HVO100 from a generic renewable diesel into a tradable, claimable decarbonisation product. It improves market access and price realisation but adds compliance cost and constrains feedstock flexibility. If you’re evaluating a blending or distribution model, the certification is less optional than it appears—particularly if you want to monetise emissions reductions rather than just achieve them.

HVO100 that is not ISCC certified:

·         Cannot make defensible emissions claims – as users cannot credibly quantify lifecycle GHG reduction; and may not be eligible for formal reporting under frameworks aligned to renewable energy directives:

  • ·         Lacks compliance and credit value – as it is ineligible for renewable fuel credits, mandates, or certificates in regulated markets, and users can forfeit any price premium tied to verified carbon intensity.

  • ·         Risks greenwashing claims and reputational risk – given that no chain-of-custody invites scrutiny and there is a higher exposure to stakeholder challenge (investors, regulators, customers)

  • ·         Ensures feedstock uncertainty – with no assurance inputs avoid deforestation, high ILUC risk, or waste fraud; and the potential for hidden exposure to controversial inputs (e.g., palm derivatives).

  • ·         Increases the risk of procurement and contracting friction – as it is harder to embed in long-term offtake agreements tied to emissions KPIs; and buyers may demand warranties or indemnities or avoid it entirely

  • ·         Risks future regulatory risk – in that if Australia tightens fuel standards or adopts certification-linked schemes, non-certified supply may become stranded or discounted.

  • ·         Offers internal accounting limitations in that it offers limited or no recognition in audited Scope 1/3 reductions under common standards; and weakens internal carbon pricing or abatement cost justification.

Non-ISCC certified HVO100 functions as a fuel substitute but not a carbon product. You retain operational benefits (drop-in, lower tailpipe particulates) but lose most commercial and reportable decarbonisation value. For any strategy relying on emissions claims, premiums, or compliance, the downside is material.

So, before you purchase HVO100, ensure that it is ISCC certified. HVO100n from TotalEnergies, as sold by GreenTECH Fuel is 100% ISCC certified.
