It has been suggested that HVO100 is expensive, and it is true – HVO100 costs more than standard diesel, but it has clear advantages over standard diesel. It is 95% carbon-neutral and it is available. For businesses needing to reduce diesel emissions, it is difficult to imagine a more effective product. For businesses concerned about the availability of standard diesel, HVO100 can be a lifeline. It is available even when the Straits of Hormuz is closed.

Fossil-free, ‘hydrotreated vegetable oil’ diesel is at least 95% carbon neutral. A ‘renewable diesel’ HVO100 is produced from sustainably sourced vegetable and animal matter. Its production does not negatively impact the environment. HVO100 is a high-quality fuel with a chemical structure almost identical to regular mineral diesel. It can, therefore, fully replace fossil diesel.

HVO100 renewable diesel complies with the EN15940 specification and the new Australian “Fuel Quality standards (Paraffinic Diesel) Determination 2025” (Mineral diesel 820 – 850Kg/m3 HVO 765-800Kg/m3). It works seamlessly on all modern diesel engines and has been approved by leading engine manufacturers of most heavy vehicles.

ISCC certification ensures that HVO100 contains no palm oil, rape seed or linseed oil.

Compared to biodiesel, HVO100 renewable diesel offers:

  • Biodiesel must be blended with mineral diesel, while HVO100 is a drop-in fuel that can be mixed or used neat, delivering superior emissions savings.

  • HVO100 more substantially reduces Nox than biodiesel, and as such has a greater impact on the reduction of CO2 equivalents

  • Biodiesel generally has poorer cold-flow properties than HVO100 renewable diesel, which performs better in cold weather, similar to, or better than, mineral diesel.

HVO100 can be used immediately without modification of engines or infrastructure. It offers better combustion, filterability, and cold-temperature resistance than other diesel products. Many engineers view HVO100 as the best and easiest paraffinic option for immediately reducing your carbon emissions.

HVO100:

  • Delivers at least a 95% reduction in NGERs measured CO2 emissions

  • Replaces standard diesel fuel with no changes to the vehicle.

  • Replaces standard diesel fuel with no changes to maintenance requirements.

  • Delivers superior cold start operability and storage stability.

  • Reduces local pollution emissions, including diesel particulate matter (PM) and NOx.

Following on from these deliverables are a range of benefits including:

·         Radically reducing emissions and helping businesses address their Safeguard and MCR obligations.

·         Contributing to addressing the requirements of the Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) for airborne contaminants that come into force 1 December 2026 across Australia.

·         Cold start operability and storage stability results superior to those achieved from the use of other simple biodiesels. Unlike simple biodiesels, HVO100 can also be sued without the need to blend it with standard mineral diesel, further reducing emissions.

Most importantly, HVO100, from TotalEnergies allows businesses to continue using existing vehicles, without the need for any modifications immediately. The reduction in emissions and other benefits can be delivered with the first shipment of HVO100 – just 8 weeks from the date of order. Businesses concerned about running out of mineral diesel in May or June, should act in April to boslter their supplies.
