The demand for HVO100 in Australia is growing and will continue to grow as environmental regulation becomes more demanding and the renewable diesel becomes more available and more affordable. Despite this, there is much potential purchasers want to know before placing an order.
Here are the answers to the 7 big questions about HVO100.
WHAT IS HVO100?
HVO100 or fossil-free hydrotreated vegetable oil is a renewable diesel produced from sustainably sourced vegetable oils, waste fats and animal residues. It is a 100% renewable diesel that can be used immediately without any modifications to engines or fuel infrastructure.
HOW IS HVO100 DIFFERENT FROM BIODIESEL?
HVO100 is a biodiesel. That said it is a highly specialised biodiesel. Whilst traditional biodiesels and HVO100 renewable diesel come from the same feedstock, their manufacturing processes differ.
Biodiesel is a fatty acid methyl ester - FAME, produced by the transesterification, where vegetable oils or animal fats react with methanol (or ethanol) in the presence of a catalyst to form biodiesel and glycerine.
Renewable Diesel is a hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), produced by hydrotreating. This process uses hydrogen to remove oxygen from fats/oils, resulting in a diesel with a chemical structure similar to a standard mineral diesel, enabling it to be used as a 100% drop-in replacement.
Both are more environmentally friendly than mineral diesel, with HVO100 making a greater contribution to emissions reductions than biodiesel.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HVO100?
HVO100:
· Delivers at least a 95% reduction in NGERs-measured CO₂ emissions.
· Replaces conventional diesel without requiring any modifications to vehicles or storage
· Requires no changes to existing maintenance schedules or procedures.
· Provides superior cold-start performance and storage stability.
· Reduces local pollutant emissions, including particulate matter and NOx
Most importantly the Clean Energy Regulator considers HVO100 at least 95% carbon-neutral. Also important is the fact that HVO100 reduced NOX emissions significantly more than other FAME biofuels.
ARE THERE HVO100 OPTIONS?
There are a range of options open to businesses considering the use of HVO100. These include – dosage options and category options.
While ideally use neat, HVO100 can also be blended with mineral diesel. Unlike other biodiesels. HVO100 can be used 100% neat – delivering a 95% + reduction in emissions. Without OEM confirmation it is recommended that other FAME biodiesels constitute no more than around 7% of a blend. It can go as high as 20% with OEM confirmation. HVO100 can be blended with mineral diesels at what ever ratio best meets the requirements and budget of the user.
GreenTECH Fuel markets three categories of HVO100 – standard, premium and premium plus. Standard diesel is 100% HVO100 and delivers the benefits outlined above. HVO100 Premium is, like any premium fuel, blended with a concentrate – EPC+ - that delivers a range of benefits including:
· A 2% to 5% reduction in the consumption of HVO100.
· A further 2% to 5% reduction in carbon emissions.
· A further reduction in diesel particulate matter.
· A further reduction in fuel injector fouling.
· A further increase in fuel injector life.
HVO100 Premium+ is a customised renewable diesel for blending with standard or premium mineral diesel. It incorporates EPC+ from TotalEnergies, at the ratio required to treat both the HVO100 and the mineral diesel with which it is blended. The result the final blend has a higher specification – delivering a very high-quality premium diesel that ensures optimum result are achieved when blending HVO100 with standard mineral diesel.
When blended with standard mineral diesel, HVO100 Premium+ significantly reduces the cost differential between mineral diesel and HVO100, by reducing overall consumption and emissions making the blended diesel more affordable and more effective. EPC+ also helps further reduce the fuel consumption and emissions beyond the 95% offered by HVO100.
This will be for many businesses – the optimum balance between the needs to reduce emissions while managing costs. Emissions are slashed and costs are moderated.
ARE ALL HVO100s THE SAME?
No. HVO100 from TotalEnergies is ISCC-certified. ISCC certification verifies the feedstock is sustainably sourced (ensuring that it contains no palm oil, rapeseed oil or linseed oil), the integrity of the supply chain, carbon accounting, and auditability against recognised sustainability requirements. This makes HVO100 from TotalEnergies a benchmark product in renewable diesel, helping users maximise the sustainability value of their fuel choices.
To avoid accusations of greenwashing and demonstrate credible environmental performance, businesses in Australia should purchase only ISCC-certified HVO100 and ensure that the certification can be independently verified.
WHAT IS THE AVAILABILITY OF HVO100?
HVO100 is now available in Australia through GreenTECH Fuel. An eight-week delivery time is anticipated.
WHAT IS THE COST OF HVO100?
HVO100 is more expensive that mineral diesel. It attracts a premium because of the low volumes sold, its specialist nature and the fact that it is subject to the same excise as mineral diesel. That said, GreenTECH Fuel is working with customers to implement strategies that bring the price of the fuel down, including order aggregation and blending (using HVO100 Premium+).
GreenTECH Fuel also hope to bring HVO100 into Australia in bulk in late 2026.
GreenTECH Fuel has developed calculator that customers and prospects can use to determine the most cost -effective strategy for purchasing HVO100. This calculator is available upon request, without cost or obligation.
IN CONCLUSION
Take another look at HVO100. It is a powerful solution for businesses needing or wanting to rapidly reduce emissions quickly and without upgrading diesel vehicles. HVO100m is superior to FAME biodiesel and the range of options mean purchasers can buy HVO100 in a way that suits their budgets and environmental considerations. Best of all, it is available and there are strategies for reducing the cost.
